What cookies and browser storage are
Cookies are small text records stored by your browser. Similar technologies, including local storage, can remember information on your device. They can keep a session secure, remember a choice, or preserve progress between pages.
What we currently use
- Authentication and security: Supabase session records help keep you signed in, verify requests, and protect accounts.
- Feature continuity: browser storage may preserve an in-progress guest assessment, transfer a completed score after registration, or resume a study activity.
- Preferences: essential interface settings may be remembered so the service works as expected.
These technologies are used to provide features you request and to keep the service secure. Blocking them may prevent sign-in, score saving, or other core functionality.
Analytics
We use two analytics services, and they work differently.
Vercel Web Analytics counts page views and measures how quickly pages load. It is cookieless: it sets no cookies, stores nothing on your device, and does not follow you across other websites. Visitors are counted using a temporary identifier derived from the incoming request, which is not retained as a persistent profile.
Google Analytics 4 does set cookies. It helps us understand which pages people find useful, how they move through the site, and which search terms bring them here. It places two cookies in your browser, _ga and a second beginning _ga_, which distinguish one visitor from another and group page views into a single visit. By default these persist for up to two years. Google processes this data on our behalf; see Google’s privacy policy for how they handle it.
We do not use these cookies for advertising, and we do not use advertising cookies, remarketing, or cross-site tracking of any kind.
Opting out of analytics
You can block or delete analytics cookies through your browser settings, described below. Google also publishes a browser add-on that opts you out of Google Analytics across every site that uses it. Blocking analytics does not affect your ability to use Know Food Safety: sign-in, saved progress, and purchased access all work normally without it.
Managing storage
You can inspect, block, or delete cookies and site data through your browser settings. Deleting essential session data will usually sign you out, and deleting local storage may remove unsaved guest progress.
